Downloads on DC++ 0.691 freeze.

Post by LupusCanis » 2006-09-22 01:51

Looks normal, can do everything else, but the downloads are just frozen - they don't progress any further.

This happens out of the blue, and after DC++ has been running a while.

Running Windows XP Professional, and I've noticed that whenever this happens, there are always two instances of DCPlusPlus in the Processes tab of TaskManager

ok first of all there should never be two instances of DCPlusPlus running unless you open both of them, one of them either accidently started by you miss clicking or clicking your mouse too much to start it, or there is something fishy going on here, try opening up dc++ then opening up taskman to make sure you only have one instances of DCPlusPlus running, I am 98% sure this will solve your problem....

Dcplusplus only allows one process of it to be run. If you try and run a second one, it just brings the first to the front. So something else i suppose. :P

Dcplusplus only allows one process of it to be run.
If its original DC++ at all in this case. Many of mods allow more than one instance and also have an option to start with windows automatically. Also you can run DC++ with different mods paralel since their MutexName are different but ofcourse they can occupy the same ports, etc...

And if they are using dc++ mods, they should be on the mod's forum, not this once. hence my post about single instances.

No, when I do a misclick and load up more than one instance of DC++ an actual error message comes up.

This happens without any intervention when I have had it running for a while. Something happens that makes it unhappy, freezes, sometimes with the whole program window going white, sometimes the program works, but all downloads are just frozen.

Usually this happens when left overnight, I have a firewall on (ports forwarded of course, I can download), no spyware or adware atm, anti-virus etc.

It doesn't START UP with two instances of DC++, just in processes, after it freezes, there are two. You can only actually see one instance of DC++ without checking the processes, but it is down twice in the processes tab when it freezes.

Sorry if I'm not explaining too well.

It's only one copy of DC++, just 0.691. When it freezes, there are two processes called DCPlusPlus running, when it doesn't, there's only one. Sometimes you can see two in Applications, but not always.

I can do screenshots to show it better, if anyone's interested?

Also, my connection seems to cut out a lot more when I'm running DC++ ... but I'm not 100% sure that it is the problem, as the same copy (running off an external for some reason) doesn't cause the connection drops on another machine. But the first problem is more important.

So, you run dc++. After a while a second dc++ turns up, without you doing anything ?

I load it up, after a while a second DC++ PROCESS appears (and occasionally an application appears) but these are only in the Task Manager. It's not as if another DC++ window pops up or anything. And yes, with me not doing anything.

It could be a resources issue - my CPU is certainly usually maxed out when DC++ is running, as for RAM - two sticks of 512MB I think.

I dont think DC++ is doing anything that it shouldnt be doing, my "guess" would be you have some other third party spyware or something of that nature causing problems, try getting Process Explorer and take a more detailed look into what apps are running and try to see if anything is running that shouldn't, also check ur registery In

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I know it seems like a long shot or it has nothing to do with the current problem but you can be surprised by what may be running without your permission......if you dont see anything that should be there we will try something else.....let me know how it turns out

That is a wild goose chase that will bring nothing, Goliath.

LupusCanis: Does only the visual side of DC++ freeze? That is, are the downloads actually being continued while DC++'s transfer view is frozen? What happens after you have pressed Ctrl+3 (View -> Transfers)?

(I would suggest you tried DC++ 0.696. It is possible that this issue has been fixed. [Though, I don't recall this issue being brought forward.])

ok its not a wild goose chase only because it happened to me, someone in my house went to a site they shouldnt have while I was away on a "state paid vacation", when I got back I had a peice of spyware that ran multiple instances of the same application, I am just trying to get him to check areas most people wouldnt, 9 times out of 10 you find problems there anyways....

Neat. There's a virus that only freezes the transfer view in DC++? Cool.

Well, I wouldn't've thought it'd've fixed anything but amazingly Goliath's suggestion actually seems (touch wood) to have fixed the problem. Been running for nearly 24 hours without a freeze.

... however, there's still a problem with something else :/

The program doesn't crash, but my internet connection does drop very briefly, but for long enough to knock me off all my hubs. Essentially, connected through a cable connection which comes through this room. Long ethernet cable goes from the modem to a wireless router downstairs, with a HUGE antenna. Pick up the connection up here using a wireless USB thing. It's positioned so it's always getting 3-5 bars on signal strength (usually 4) - I've tested it with my laptop, and ... well, I do get the same problem but VERY occasionally. As in, it drops every couple of hours on average on this machine, and it drops every couple of days on the other.

... any suggestions on what could be causing this?

check your router and make sure you have the lease set correctly, I had mines set on 1 hour by default and those bastards at best buy never told me about it, it wasent until I looked in my routers settings that I found that....I cant remember what I did to fix it but I do recall finding the answer on portfoward.com or whatever that site is, try there it should have something for you to reslove it....good luck

Use this link to find your router and model and go to where it shows you how to open ports for DC++ >>> http://www.portforward.com/

well it is something with your router that much I do know, try looking through your router config screen and see if you notice anything out of the ordinary

The thing is, that this router is used for more than one machine, the others don't have this problem.

I've checked the config screen and nothing seems unusual, as far as I can see.

well its an issue with your computer, Nortons, Firewall Programs, all of those can cause problems, try downloading Processor Explorer (More Detailed Version of Task Manager) and see if anything might be blocking your connection
