TTH is a pain

Post by viper7 » 2004-07-12 23:15

I setup DC++ as a fresh install at a lan last weekend, It's the first time i've used it in quite a while.

The problem is, that my server was the main DC++ "client" (server really, its not like it downloads), it has over 2TB of storage.

Needless to say, the lan ended before it had finished hashing. while it hashed, it either had to be set to low priority or the server virtually locked up.

Why is it mandatory now??? surely there should be a way to disable this!

You have to edit the source code to turn the feature off.

Use 0.307 or older versions, and you won't need to use hashes. If it is to be useful for "normal" users on DC, it needs to be mandatory. In 0.403 it is set to as low priority as possible, and you can even decide what speed it should hash in. Running it as slow as possible would probably be almost like not having it at all.

In 0.403, there is an option to limit hashing speed. You could've set it to 1 megabyte/s to slow down hashing.

Not having all your files hashed in 0.403 doesn't have any negative consequences.

Sidenote, viper7 == Vipero07 ?

So is love. ;))
Everyone is supposed to download from the hubs, - I don´t know why, but I never do anymore.

It does for other users, searching sources by TTH.

TTH is great, it took me a little over an hour to hash 50 GiB, so with 2 TiB it should take less than 2 days, unless you have a bottleneck somewhere. Also you could have checked changelogs and dl'ed 0.403 which includes a hashing speed limiter. I don't see how hashing can make your server crash, unless it's not a very good one :)

Well, sure, but users can still access your files and download from you. Specifically, unhashed files are still shared, which may not always be the case.
