Absolute & Porous DL Slots

Post by Seisled » 2004-03-25 14:14

I didn't find a thread relating specifically to absolute & porous DL slots, so I thought I'd mention it even though it is a little obvious. If it were possible to set an absolute limit on download slots in addition to the porous limit I believe it would be useful.

For instance, currently I have the porous limit set at 20 and this is well-surpassed after a short while because I have a substantial number of DLs set at highest priority. This is what I intended, however, when the total DLs exceed 50 at a given time, then the speed obviously goes down quite dramatically on each DL. So, if it were possible to set an absolute limit on DL slots (that DC would not exceed under any circumstances based on DL priority) in addition to the porous limit then I believe it would be useful in situations like the one I described above.

I think the highest I've ever gotten was somewhere around 15 downloads at the same time... no idea how some of these people do it. The simple solution is: don't use highest priority, use high and set other ones down as you need to.

Well, since I pretty much only hang out in hubs with 1000+ users and am always connected to at least four hubs, my 50 slots are spread out over a minimum of 4000+ people across 4 hubs. In any case, most of the time my total slots are around 35-40 since I'm constantly pruning DLs.

so?
if your 50 slots are legit, I'm sure you are sharing as many slots?

I think the function "open new slots when speed is below xx" gives the same result..

I think you were looking for "soft limit" and "hard limit", though after reading your request everyone should know what you mean.

Most hubs don't have rules suggesting you can only DL from as many slots as you are ULing, so I don't really know what you're getting at. If you just wanted to say that you don't like the fact that occasionally I get 50 DLs going at once, then you've already communicated that clearly enough. Though, if you're suggesting that somehow my slots aren't legitimate if I don't have a 1:1 UL/DL slot ratio then I'd have to say this is incorrect, as this is not against the rules in the hubs I frequent. But, if you follow a 1:1 UL/DL slot-ratio, then I commend you for your good-willed sentiment.

Yes, that's true, sorry for my confusion about the terminology.

I could have sworn that it would only go over the max download slots setting by 3. At least it's supposed to. In that case, just set it to 47
