Upload speed limit in dc++ client !!!
I know this has been requested definetly before, but its a must feature.
When we are going to see that future ?
Or is it impossible and we need to change to other dc client that supports it ???

it is definetly needed, otherwise all our bandwidth is sucked away by some user(s) with a high speed link - therefore we can't even check our mail :p
also if one user with a fast link downloads from another fast link user, he/she gets all the upstream, and other people on a slower link get like 3 kB/s
if there was an opportunity to set a speed limit for our upstream, everyone could get equal speed, and we could even surf in the web without having to waiting 3 minutes for a page to load
everyone would be happy

If everyone uses NetLimiter to bring their UL down to 1 kb/s, then no one will be downloading much of anything. If you use a bandwidth attenuation method, please be responsible and allocate at least one quarter of your DL bandwidth to UL. Blatantly cheating with your bandwidth is right up there with fake-sharing in my opinion, and in some ways I believe it's worse.Just use Netlimiter
If everyone followed this rule, then I would be largely in favor of programs like NetLimiter because I believe it would greatly encourage the growth of the DC community.
Upload capping only sux when its abused, alot of people would not be in hubs if they could not cap their upload partially so that they can actually download at a reasonable speed. Other times I find myself wanting to upload something to my website so I cap the person a bit so i can put it u there faster, if I couldn't do that then I would likely shut dc for a few minutes while I did that meaning the person downloading off me would lose their slot which is much worse then being capped for a short period of time.grasfer wrote:And yes, upload capping sux

Isn't it possible for OP's to automatically download from random users, and when a speed is below x kb/s, the user gets kicked (or banned)
I totally agree with twink that upload capping is a wonderfull feature as long as it's not abused, because of netlimiter, i am allmost the whole day available in dc++, and when i want to use the internet, i just cap the upload a little, and when i'm done, i release the limiter and people can download at full speed..
recently i got kicked out of a hub because i shared netlimiter, i think that's sick

this feature is dangerous for one reason alone..
* most ppl are stupid
and since we can't force everyone to "read and understand" some guiding text before using the feature... it's likely that alot of users will abuse it in the belief that it helps them get better speeds..
question is.. are we willing to take that risk?

Sure OPs can do whatever they want, regardless of how wise it is. There are a lot more variables to "how fast can i download from user x" than whether or not they're using a limiting client or 3rd party application. If you're unsure about this, look at the Help/Support section at the number of users who complain about download speeds.Wisp wrote:Isn't it possible for OP's to automatically download from random users, and when a speed is below x kb/s, the user gets kicked (or banned)
Re: Upload speed limit in dc++ client !!!
I think a total connection speed limit would be better, plus the ability to count upload/download ratio for ADSL.

Here's the reason that I need an upload cap: my upstream is 32K / s. My cable modem simply sends 32K of data each second then queues or drops packets for the rest of the second. Here's the problem: if someone grabs 32K/s of my upstream bandwidth, it chokes TCP and ACKs aren't sent: either stuck in the modem or dropped. Ergo, it chokes all web browsing / email / other activities.
What I think most people want is the ability to preserve something on the order of 2-3K/s of upstream bandwidth. I don't know how you do that fairly and avoid cheaters, except perhaps by sampling on the hubs. Or even use some of the free services that allow you to test your upstream bandwidth and automatically cap at 3K/s less than the tested bandwidth. This would obviously be cheatable, but you could resample at random intervals.
I personally do traffic shaping with FreeBSD. Otherwise, the internet becomes unuseable for normal work while DC++ is running. Consider which is better: 30K/s instead of 32K/s, or 0 K/s while I or my roommates are using the computer. I can enforce upload caps on my NAT box, but most people are forced to make the former choice.
