Opera has done great things with DC++, don't get me wrong arne, I know that you are the real brain behind this application. But Opera has added many improvements to the GUI... another example I want to see in DC++..

Image

Opera has rearranged the menues real nice.. much better than the present in DC++.. also new buttons for existing features has been added, features that for some reason (?) don't have a button.. (open filelist, favorite users, search spy) also notice the little botton on the top left.. shows the same icon as in the tab when that window is open... The buttons are also toggleable, witch means that if I click the notepad button again... the notepad window will close.. :)

And, unlike Opera, I send patches for my code into Arne for inclusion in DC++. :)

(I saw the separator in oDC, I hadn't looked closely enough at the TBBUTTON previously.)

(of course, I created all the folder icons myself.. I think the eye with the spyglass is easier to understand than the gamespy icon.)

no reason for Opera to send patches, he has his own client.. I like you spyglass eye btw.. but Operas favorite users was better, gotta admit that.. and you forgot one thing.. the nice thing with oDCs way of doing it is that the menues are much better sorted.. and the buttons is placed below the menue they belong to.. more logical... btw. what is that folder with the black arrow??

option 1) have arne duplicate Opera's efforts
option 2) have arne ignore the whole thing
option 3) have Opera take a tiny bit of time and fix a patch
:-S

MT has his own client, so do Sarf and Cologic.. don't tell me there's no reason for them to send patches.
btw. what is that folder with the black arrow??
[edit: oops.. I thought you meant the grey thingy ;) ]

if I may venture a guess, I'd say a _disabled/greyedout_ upload queue

Yes he does, but technically any programmer other than Arne who compiles DC++ with changes has his own client. That doesn't mean that features have to be exclusive to that mod... after all, oDC is nothing without DC++, just a set of patches and some resource files. That doesn't cheapen the work that Opera has done, for he's made a lot of nice changes.
cyberal wrote:but Operas favorite users was better, gotta admit that.. and you forgot one thing..
Well, since the gold star is for favorite hubs (even though the frame icon has always been a blue star), the blue star is pretty intuitive for favorite users. The LEGO- like people don't do much for me, personally.

I ignored the menu rearrangement. If you're used to oDC's menu placement, of course it will be more intuitive. I don't think there's anything wrong with DC++'s layout, and on mine, at least, all of the similar functions are grouped (without separators). Who needs the menus, though, when you have a fully populated toolbar? ;)
cyberal wrote:btw. what is that folder with the black arrow??
Just like the incons in MS Word, Visual Studio, et. al. It stands for "Open" - Opening a File list.

There's other things that you mentioned that are nice, like the toggling state icons for singleton windows.

Ofcourse they can send patches or fixes for things that don't work as they should. But why should Opera take the time to send a GUI patch for the button bar to arne when the current isn't "broken"? Thats one of oDCs main things... better GUI! And you can't really compare with either sarf or cologic.. oDC is more widely used.. not that it's relevant at all. ah well.. nothing stops arne from looking in the code from the mods himself either.. but he doesn't for some reason.. I know I would!

I just LOVE those "LEGO-like ppl" :) .. and if you are new with DC.. the ppl+star makes more sence than a blue star.

yeah, you're right
GargoyleMT wrote:There's other things that you mentioned that are nice, like the toggling state icons for singleton windows.
yeah, that feature is great, could have the same thing for an away button..

<sarcasm>yes.. why make a good product better?</sarcasm>
sorry for flaming you there. but I don't think that argument cuts any wood (dutch expression, meaning it's not good)

if Opera updates his client the same way sarf does, it would only save him time if more of his features are in the main branch. (i.e. add your own stuff to the new version, instead of adding the new stuff from the original branch to your own old version. the latter way is more error prone I think)
if you go by this principle, the way to go would be: submit patch to arne, if rejected, add to own mod.
cyberal wrote:And you can't really compare with either sarf or cologic.. oDC is more widely used..
actually.. both are very much liked by adsl/cable users for their upload limiting capabilities - though I agree that swedes do not come into contact with the issue that often ;)
cyberal wrote:ah well.. nothing stops arne from looking in the code from the mods himself either.. but he doesn't for some reason.. I know I would!
Compile.txt wrote:By submitting a patch, you agree to that I get copyright of it. This to avoid stupid situations later on where the copyright is split out over a million people, each of which could stop further distribution of DC++.
this means that arne _may_ steal code from the other mods, but he would not have copyright on the particular piece of code; and that would complicate matters.
GargoyleMT wrote:Well, since the gold star is for favorite hubs (even though the frame icon has always been a blue star), the blue star is pretty intuitive for favorite users. The LEGO- like people don't do much for me, personally.
hm.. I must agree with cyberal there, and add that I don't find the star for favorite hubs any intuitive either. I would've liked a book there instead, for bookmarks. (and yeah.. I'm not for those candy/lego-type pictures either, but most XP users are.. why not give them what they want -- same goes for extra buttons and stuff, if they're accessible through keyboard shortcuts and/or /-commands as well, I won't mind)

(and on accessibility notes (not really on-topic), if I have time/energy to spare, I'd like to make a startup wizard, allowing n00bs to set nick+connection-type+external-ip/active/passive+slots+share on first start)

Good idea!

The rest of the points posted by you and cybereal are good, there's no need to argue with them in my mind. :-D

Okay, so it's either re-code the features, or get Opera to contribute patches to Arne. :)

Why can't opera work together with Arne.. arne could make the main code and opera could make the interface and additional features and fixes
