setting up a DC++ server for use over college network

Which hub software is the best? Where can I find script XXX? Discuss it here...(no, this is not for advertising your hub...)

setting up a DC++ server for use over college network

Post by measuredincm » 2003-09-27 12:56

Hey...I'm trying to set up a hub to share files with the other students here. I've been doing alot of reading on these forums and elsewhere, but I've sort of hit a brick wall.

I'm using the latest version of PtokaX(and I've tried the neo-modus one as well). I put my IP address(from typing ipconfig at the command prompt) for the hub address, and I've been trying ports 21, 411, and 1080. I know port 21 isn't blocked through the college network because I can use FTP through that port with no problems.

Anyway, I can always connect to my own server, no matter what port I've chosen for the server. The MOTD pops up and everything. However, I can't get any other computers to connect to my hub through the network. They simply get no response. I've tried a few different ports, and I've tried getting a redirect address from no-ip.com.

Does anyone have any more suggestions?

In the hub setup put your address you got from no.ip and specify which port you are listening on, the default is 411, if you use a different port specify it in your no.ip address.
Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

It gets no response. I've tried putting my IP and my no-ip address in the Hub Address box, as well as a few different ports for each, but I can't connect to the hub from other computers.

I just HOPE you're not firewalled.. Both windows firewall (local connection settings - advanced - unclick the box) and turn off any zonealarms or nortonpersonalfirewalls, right?

on college network, probablility that people from outside will not be able to connect to your server are very high.
chance are that you have a non routable IP.
internet users can't have direct access to a non routable IP.
that is why forwarding a port is needed, since you can't change the setting of the gateway...

if you set it only for people on same intranet, it should work.

to get access to your hub users will have to use your puter IP:port, DNS can't be resolve directly for non routable IP, it must be done from inside the intranet.
in most intranet network it isnt done.

does your puter IP begin by 10, 172 or 192

Code: Select all

Class A	10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
         Class B	172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
         Class C	192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

Ive got a little Hub goin for my buddies and I on the Lan here at school...(im at Texas Tech) i didnt really have any problems getting it setup... the main thing is getting people to use it... on average we have 2 users... ive peaked at 7... I started out using the neo-modus hub and now ive switched to YHub

i just tell people the address is 129.118.174.220:1090 and they can connect to that just fine... people on the outside are not able to connect unless they are a student and can vpn into the lan here...
