This will be brief, so apologies for incomplete sentences.
  • Computers locate each other using IP addresses. eg. 1.2.3.4
  • Humans locate things using words ("domain names"). eg. hub.no-ip.com
  • DNS (Domain Name Server) does a conversion between the two.
  • If you have a static (fixed) IP address and you register a domain name, the two will always correspond.
  • Typical ISPs give you dynamic IP addresses though, so the mapping will only be valid until your IP address changes.
  • With a dynamic DNS service such as no-ip or DynDNS, your register a name such as hub.no-ip.com.
  • They give you software which will update the DNS records every time your IP address changes.
  • You can now use just the domain name without worrying about whether or not your IP address has changed.
You can register for the service by going to the relevant web site such as www.no-ip.com and www.dyndns.org and following the instructions there.

Let me know if I have answered your question of if you need further clarification on any points.

There is some info about the dynamic DNS service at the following thread:
http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/forum ... php?t=4932
Most of it is beyond what you are asking here, but there is some pertinent information there.

Look at all the options that are available in the software. Play around with things. Experiment. You can't hurt anyone if you do something wrong.

We learn by experimenting.

you can't op/admin yourself if you're a simple user, think about security problem if a user could do that.

as TheParanoidOne sayed play with the thing, it's the best way to learn.

I'm curious as to what you have spent the two hours doing. Surely you must have found *some* option or checkbox in the hub software to make a user an op.

Let's look at it from another angle. So you spent two hours looking at the software. You must have seen a lot of it. Perhaps you could describe some of the features you have seen? It could be that you have actually seen the function that you want, but it wasn't labelled as you would expect.

So, what have you learned?

If you can carry out the functions of an op, and the software indicates in *some* way that you are an op, then you are an op. Plain and simple.

If you connect to the hub using DC++, you should appear in the user list with a key next you your name. Is that the case?

Absolutely no idea. I would assume that if you update the information in your hub software, the changes would eventually propagate up to www.hublist.org

www.hublist.org wrote:All features (like hubowners remote administration) are not yet enabled.
From my experience, the info about each hub, specifically the description, *never* changes. But they are doing wonderful things over there, so I shouldn't bitch. :) You could email an admin maybe.
