For Admins and OP's- How to Make a permanent bans permanent?

Post by Zmyth » 2004-09-30 23:28

We all know that permanent bans can be easily gotten around by changing your IP or username. I have seen other threads disscussing this but nobody really talks about the solutions. I want to keep this thread just about the solutions please!

*The most practical solution I have heard so far is to register users. Is this really the best option?
*I have also heard that if you are on a network that uses netbios you can get MAC addresses. The problem is that you can fake MAC addresses too.
* Keep in mind that I am running this hub on a college campus so everybody connected to my hub is on the network. If anybody has any solutions for a network that would be great.

I am using Ptotax for my hub

Thanks All!

Another possibility is to block the person's IP address in your firewall.

well that wouldnt solve anything because they could just change their IP's like they normally do to get past the ban.
Also just to make things clear this isnt a personal network. It is the schools network. Thanks for the comment though.

aside from assigning client id's built into the DC++ software - which not many people would like to have since it could identifiy them to the riaa as well. - there isnt much we can do....

So then is registering users really the best way? It just seems like such a hassle. Are there any bots/scripts that could help? I do want to avoid assigning ID's because I have heard those can be faked also but I really don't know much about the process.

Well, if it's on a college campus, you should be able to find out who the people really are and instead of just banning them from the hub, get a group of thugs together and beat the shit out of them for being stupid.
