IP to name

Which hub software is the best? Where can I find script XXX? Discuss it here...(no, this is not for advertising your hub...)

IP to name

Post by Okilian » 2004-08-25 21:55

Ok, I know how to set up a hub with an IP, but since I am at a college and I would like to keep a semi low profile, I know there are hubs out there that don't show anything but a name. What way is there to do that? Hopefully, if there is, it's free. That would help someone poor like me.

A name... a DNS? Such as yourhub.dyndns.org? Yes, www.no-ip.com or www.dyndns.org will do that for free.

Of course, a simple ping will reveal your IP address. There is 0 level of security there

A real option for laying low is to set your hub software to not register to the public hublists and only give the address out to people you know.

I knew a hub, let's just call the name....Joseph

instead of www.joseph-ispn.com, it was...Joseph to get his hub.

When u logged on it would show like Joseph (Joseph)

Is that possible to do with anything?

Here is what it looked like with the person's hub (it did exist, I just changed it for privacy)

Can be done by adding an entry to your hosts file, but that would need to be done on every person's machine.

in DC++ title bar also ?
i think /fav use what the hub is sending with $HubName <NEW TOPIC STRING>|
then what your looking for is a feature call "change topic", if your hub is scripts able.
the script should send $HubName <NEW TOPIC STRING>| to all clients when they log.
$HubName is already sent with the title you see in DC++, this would change it to what you want.
i think yhub also have an option to change what the hub send.

No. They would still need an adress to connect to it.

You can use either an IP number or a DNS adress to connect to. DNS = myhub.com or myhub.no-ip.com.

Only for users who have the same set of suffixes as you in their DNS resolution setup. Depending on your setup, your computer or resolver will try to look up Joseph, then Joseph.ISP.NET (or Joseph.WORK.COM).

What you want isn't possible. Even if it were, you would only be fooling non-computer savvy users, not anyone who you might have a genuine reason to be fearful of.
