High pings while using DC++

Post by dominyx » 2003-05-11 20:36

Well I think I have found the real problem here. Whenever anyone on my network is running DC++, latest version, or the original DC for that matter, pings skyrocket to the 6-700ms range. I'm on a cable modem, and I'm pretty damn sure it's DC, as the pings rocket when I start downloading, and return to normal when I stop. Any idea why this is? Thanks.

This happens because the amount of data sent by the DC/DC++ clients saturate your upstream, "crowding" your game-packets out of the way and only letting them slip by occasionally, thus leading to high ping and/or high packet loss rate since they either have to be resent many times or are simply lost on the way.

Solution: uploadlimit the DC clients (using an already modified client) or shape the bandwidth of your LAN so that your computer always gets a little piece of the cake (enough to transfer your game-packets).
