Nullsofts WASTE p2p protocol (and DC mentioned on CNN.com)

Post by Xan1977 » 2003-07-29 21:49

Crap, we made the news (kinda). There's just a quick mention of DC, but the article is mostly about Nullsofts 'WASTE' p2p protocol.

http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/internet/0 ... index.html

Nullsoft's offical response about WASTE is rather interesting > http://www.nullsoft.com/free/waste/download.html

But it's on Sourceforge now http://sourceforge.net/projects/waste

I went into a click-circle trying to get information about this WASTE thing. Has anyone used it yet?

Well, you can find a little bit out about it by visiting ZeroPaid and looking at user comments about WASTE based releases. (there's a high signal to noise ratio, and of course some trolls and fanboys, no different than elsewhere)

And Justin Frankel's blog is here: http://www.1014.org/ He was the person who posted it, just like he posted Gnutella back in Napster's day.

I wouldn't be surprised if Slashdot had a story or two about WASTE, nor would I be surprised if it already has a writeup on Everything2.org.

Cool, thx much.

ZeroPaid has info and a DL link. In terms of security, it looks like it is just as good as a private hub.

Well it's a bit better then that....

Since the traffic is encrypted anyone intercepting it (ISP's) would have a helluva time trying to figure out what type of data was being transmitted.

With DC all they have to do is READ the packets for protocol messages and re-assemble them for downloads.

The hardest thing (by no means difficult) would be to reassemble and decode a DC++ filelist.

So Waste is more secure in that regard then a private hub.
