blocking download/upload

Post by alphadec » 2003-12-29 17:58

Is it possible for me running a "client" (Dc++) to block a user from downloading a file from my harddrive, or is it any chance this feature will be availble in the future. ?

Not with DC++ . Has been rejected in features.
Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

I'm interested. Why do you want that particular feature?

The reason is very simple, when u have users that only have modem and is trying to download 800mb file :D

It can be very frustrating when these users do not reply to privat messages, that is why I would like a feature that would let me block some users from download from me.

I really hope that you all reconsider this feature becouse I feel this is a very much wanted feature.

What's wrong with using the "Open an extra slot" feature if speed is below.. say.. 3 kBps? Everyone wins :)

Ah, I understand. That said, Xan is right about the "auto open" slot feature. It lets the slow users download from you while not "blocking" the slot for higher speed users.

DC++ is about sharing and being generous, remember that.

I also want this feature

Post by RoadRunner2003 » 2004-01-06 16:54

... and I will explain why.

There are some users that use Netlimiter or other similar products and they download from me with 1MB and in the same time I downloaded from him/her with 5kb. This users deserve this.

If the ops do not respond to a user limiting artificially low, then you need to find a new place to hang out.

what about those people that try to download off of you, but keep losing the connection from packet loss(they start at 12k, drop gradually down to zero, disconnect, reconnect and repeat). I had someone do that until they were back down to zero once
"but we believe that we will be able to recoup much of the cost through a special pay-per-view TV special, in which the staff members responsible for the problems will commit ritual suicide to atone for their sins."

well in the time that they are disconnected and can reconnect and in the time that they're sitting on very low speeds another user could grab a slot off you if they wanted, so there isn't a real need to block them either.

I do the opposite, i add such users to Favorites and grant them slots automaticly...
Everyone is supposed to download from the hubs, - I don´t know why, but I never do anymore.

although now that I think about it a block download might be handy, ie stop my client downloading off certain people, but not stopping them downloading off me

Something like a more "global" remove user from queue?

Or a Never-users list - people you never want to use as sources.

The "block downloads from these users" is the only part that stands a chance of acceptance.

A global remove user from queue would work, but it wouldn't stop me queuing new downloads off this person. A never download from list would fix that but if i forget who's in the list I'm sure that I'll get confused when a file won't queue = more help posts by people.

blocking download/upload

Post by spider12 » 2004-01-11 13:24

hello all,
i have another reason why i think blocking download/upload is a good idea.
i'm a member of a private hub and usually share whatever i have with others in that hub. however, i also use the public hubs, who may have a ban on certain stuff being shared. before anyone asks- NO it's not sick $hit (kids or animals)
so if the hub owner, operator/moderator found something in your share folder he could block anyone from downloading it.
if they can scan your share folder for undesirable stuff i think they should be able to put a ban on anyone downloading it without kicking off the person who has the stuff shared.

i hope what iv'e writen is understandable coz i'm absolutely crap at explaining my self :)

hehe
i'm about to answer my own question  which is to install DC++ twice
and have one as a public hub with share folders and the second install have it as a private hub and either the same share folders and a folder not for public sharing.

Operators being able to ban users from downloading certain types of files in your share is... a scary idea.

Would they really go through the effort to do this instead of kickbanning you?
