Search queue

Post by PekkaPucko » 2003-07-31 09:17

Hi dudes!

is there any possibilities to add some kind of a search queue to the DC++, and a timelimit to it, like 5 or 10 seconds, then all the searches go to a queue there and wait for the specified time to pass before launching a search window. that way i can feel sure that i don't irritate any HUB owner by doing a lot of searches way too often. That would be pretty cool :)

* I set my client search timeout to 10 seconds.
* I do a search which immediatly triggers my search timer, counting down from 10.
* After 6 seconds i do another search, which isn't sent until my timer is on 0.

This will have this effect:
1. The hub don't have to recieve and handle abusive searches.
2. The hub don't have to answer all the abusive searches with "Ignored, 10 second timeout".
3. I don't have to wait for my search results to come up, not yet knowing it have been ignored.
4. I don't have to research again only to find that I once again was to fast and my second search have been ignored also!!

so.. watcha think?
All in all, yes.. this is a good idea!

What happens when I queue up two searches from the same search window. Should the second set of results overwrite the first set? Should a new search window be opened?

I think a queue system for the search is way to much! Not needed, all I want (and I speak only for myself) is to move the search timeout from the hub to me for all the reasons above... no need to do multiple manual searches at once..

True, it's not needed to do a lot of manual searches at once, but every now and then you happen to do a typo and realise that too late, and that's when most of the multiple manual searches happen

yes, but in that case one timeout counter is enough (like mentioned above). An simple timeout counter shouldn't be that hard to implement, but if the search must be able to handle multiple searches in a queue, it becomes comlicated..
