File list refreshing

Post by Mordok » 2003-07-22 10:31

:?: Could it be possible that in next version of DC++ would have file list autorefresh once in 15 minutes?

Why the poll? It will not help you get your feature coded any faster.

What's wrong with the hourly option?

(You'll need to explain new features a bit more than that.)

To be honest, I think one hour is still to often. Once a day sounds plenty. Most people don't change their shares very often.

that the problem is that 15 minutes would be more faster and so there would be less wrong info when searching...

I can agree that a more frequent refresh would be nice, lotsa ppl move their stuff around all the time for some reason. I don't but I see why ppl sould want it..

Why not make the refresh interval custumizable?

hm, well.. most ppl download stuff quite frequently I belive.. and new stuff should be shared. If you only gonna refresh once a day I see no reason to do it automaticly... but what the heck.. make a setting for X number of minutes and you get your way too :)

Share refreshes do not come at no cost. Especially if any of those files are on LAN drives. Teach people about /refresh, and the problem has a much nicer solution.

I think this is a good option if you want to change your refresh time.

But if you download big items you aren't done in less than 1 hour, and that is wath most people do i think, so why change the time.

DC++ rescans all of the directories when you refresh, if you have a large share, this can take your CPU time and network activity (for remote files). Since DC++ already uses too much CPU time for some users, this is something to keep in mind.

I thought that you meant you want filelists that you've downloaded from others to be refreshed every 15 minutes. If so, you would have to communicate with that person every 15 minutes. Doing so would cost, well, bandwidth.

But, it looks like I may have read your request wrong.

The downloads should be *verified* before sharing. This means that your dc++ folder shouldn't be shared, and this means that you will have to check them and move them to another folder. When you're done verifying/moving, simply refresh.

Ofcourse, I agree with you totally! I don't share my downloads folder, and not my finished downloads either.. always check my files before I share them. But it would be nice to get rid of the /refresh thingy!
If I have to do it manually, the least you can give me is a "refresh filelist"-button! 8)

Come up with a workable euphemism/icon/glyph idea and I'll see if I can make an icon for it. ;)

That icon (or atleast, icon style) is already used for Reconnect.
I can see it being hard to come up with an icon that everyone would instantly recognise as meaning "Refresh File List".
Perhaps if an icon for File List could be invented, then it could be combined with Open and Refresh to become Open File List and Refresh File ist.

Is manual refresh such a frequent action that it should get it's own toolbar button?

FYI, I voted No.

Oh yeah. I forgot. I haven't used dc++ for 2 months, because I don't have broadband at the moment (I'll be back on in about a week)!

Well, to me, that pic says "refresh me"!

But, here's an idea:

Use the same type of system that you have for queue, downloads, etc folder. You could have the IE refresh icon with a plug in front for reconnect, and an IE refresh icon with a, um, list for refresh filelist.

I would like to make an icon for it, but I don't know how to include a picture from my computer.

Ok, one more idea:

You can kind of do away with the reconnect/IE refresh icon.
Instead, use the same type of arrows. Um, think of outlook express. Instead of using an envelope, use a list for the filelist and a plug for reconnect.

Here is a good icon for reconnect (without the "refresh" arrows)

Who, me and myself? :)

So, what do you think? You're going to put this in (if we're lucky) so I need to know where you stand on this, GarMT.

Well, I'd like a new icon set in 24x24 (the standard toolbar size), that's free for inclusion in a GPLed program. My icons are a bit creative (but based off of the basic windows folder icon - and the clock), but many others are just copied from elsewhere. I don't think that's right, even though the copyright holders will probably never complain.

The one thing it has going for it (I like) is that it's easily enough re-created in Illustrator. I love vector graphics so much more than raster ones. :)

(my current avatar, the Laughing Man from Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex is also natively in Illustrator... I didn't have that much foresight when I created the 48x48 XP icon for DC++ though.)

Ah, yes. That's what gives it its appeal.

Sorry, but I should have made it more clear that I did NOT want to use that icon EXACTLY. It was just a start.
