About small files (<= 64 Kb)

Post by bolamix » 2005-01-19 09:06

... or it might be KiB, I'm not sure :P
I've searched but couldn't find a post on this subject, so here goes: connections are getting faster, hard drives are getting bigger, I assume most of us (leechers can stop reading now) tend to share more and more as we get bigger hard drives.
I currently share around 65 Gb, and my filelist is over 150 Kb (MyList.DcLst: 155 Kb; files.xml.bz2: 200 Kb), which in effect means that no-one can download my list if all upload slots are taken. I've been kicked for that, and haven't enjoyed it one bit (although i explained the problem to the op upon reconnection and all's well now).
Is this worth addressing at all? As I see more and more people with shares over 100 Gb, I'd answer "yes", but please give your thoughts on the subject. Maybe this 64 Kb limit could be upped a bit?
Respectfully,

bola

:?: I almost constantly have 3 uploads doing filelist uploading (minislots?) together with my selfset quota of 5 upload slots. Am I misunderstanding something here?

bolamix: filelists are not checked for size. they get a minislot just like small files however big they may be.
filelists and minislots do use up one of three minislots. only when those minislots are all used, could someone be refused to download a filelist.
this limitation however does not apply to operators.

you're making wrong assumptions and asking the wrong questions.
look into the version that particular operator was using and your version. if his version doesn't support xml lists, and your one does, it's very likely that that was the reason why he didn't get a slot.

i am, indeed... but hey I got a right answer :D Like Guitarm said, thanks for the clarification! I'll check his version, I'm almost sure he's using some version of oDC.
Cheers!

On a side note, I am amazed as always by how fast those replies came after my question... Thanks guys 8)

You should soon perhaps be able to change it yourself.

I have mine set to 10 megs since I don't tend to share many small files (or at least they aren't very popular) (BCDC++).
