upload speed

can you set a limit to your upload speed because i have a verry high upload speed like 300kb/sec but my isp is whining because i upload to much so i want to set a limit off 100kb/sec or something
Can i change that somewhere ?

Why not using a particular software which allows the user to control every single connection speed (Down\Up) and also for each running application? It's quite nice limiting like this way.

I use NetLimiter 1.30.
It's a very neat software, although not entirely free.

Whereas BCDC is entirely free, and won't limit the speed of chatting and searches/search replies. BCDC has protections against those who would abuse the limit (by setting it to < 1kb/s) - that's why we recommend it.

A bit off topic, but....

Weird ISP, are you not paying for a certain up/down speed? Why would they care if you take up all of your (paid) bandwidth 24/7?

IMHO ISP's would rather you just pay them and not use your connection at all.
I got a rude letter from an ISP about 5 years back when the first flat rate accounts started, I got told that I was 'abusing' the 24/7 connection, I just got my girl friend (lawyer) to sent them a letter with the bit about the 'always on't and I never got another e-mail from them

I understand the problems and dont know why there is not a upload limiter that works from 10 to 50% of your connection speed, so ppl cannot kill upload.

Because it's impossible to know what speed the user's upload connection is. Futhermore, people do use their upload for things other than DC++ (including other P2P networks), so even if you could get an accurate number, it wouldn't really be accurate.

BTW, the DC@fe client just uses my upload limiting code from BCDC...

That is why you just set up a routine that just lets you select between 100% and say 50% of your speed that way ppl could not effectively stop others from uploading and it doesn't matter what your speed is in relation to others as you will always be a 50% or better.

I also should have checked what I posted, as it should have read 100% to 50%, not 10%

The problem is that DC++ doesn't know what "your speed" is, and the main thrust of my last post was to say that the technical means to determine it aren't accurate.

Does not matter what the speed is, just a selector between 50% of what ever the speed is to the max , ie no limit.
That is why you only have the bottom setting of 50% of max so there is not too much chance of you allowing very slow uploads, and DC does not have to know what your absolute speed is.

Or you have something that takes an average of your download speed.

I do understand what your saying I just dont think it is that hard to implement.

I also understand the misuse factor and think its good that the DC++ ppl thought about that, but I spend a lot of the time watching ppl take from me at my full speed, me unable to get more that a few k down I then think that they will be nice enough to do the same and I just get kicked and they are off line when I go back to them.

I then think what the point and uninstall.

Let me reiterate what Gargoyle said: There are too many factors for there to be a reliable way to determine a user's max upload, so there's no point in trying to do it.

I did think about it when I coded my upload limiter. I think that it is too hard to implement. If you can prove me wrong, by submitting a patch or similar, I'll be quite happy to concede the issue to you.
