Default minimum Slot settings

Post by PuLsAr » 2006-02-24 08:21

From a hub owners pont of view, I would like to see the standard min slots
changed to 2 if at all possible. Most hubs like 2 slots - and it is also much more beneficial for everyone downloading if users have a few more open slots, and sumtimes explaining to N00Bs how to open more slots is very difficult and time consuming.
I think it is a good idea and would like to see the minimum slots set to 2.

and sumtimes explaining to N00Bs that the client is NOT the place to be enforcing hub rules...

A better approach to the situation would be to improve the current interface. From your experience, what does users find difficult when it involvs changing slots?

Just one reason why that idea sucks:

Most hubs like 2 slots - and it is also much more beneficial for everyone

Most is not EVERY hub.Freedom of having custom settings is one of DC++ features. DC++ is used in many ways - like DC LAN parties or private hubs - not only public hubs where benefits of heavy downloads are on first place :)

I agree - most is not every - but surely we must favour for the majority and not the minority as you are trying to say ?

I agree that this could be good idea, but I'd rather set max slots. 100 slots is pretty mindless idea. Even 25 slots is way too much with for example 512kbps upload. Everyone would get only 2kb/s.

So if you gonna set min slots at 2, then set max slots at 15 or 20.

This kind of rules should be enforced by the hub _not_ by the client so that we don't impair the freedom of the user (Okay, perhaps not that serious  ) as there might be situations when it would be good to be able to choose to have that number of slots.

Bun now was the request from the original poster not to limit what you can choose, only to change the default value of it.

DC++ has a history of not going the way of the majority, so this is probably doubtful to happen. You can always distribute your own copy of DC++ with customized default settings..

FCN-Eki, I agree. It's tragic the world hasn't acquired network connections faster than 512Kbps.

Yeah. Well I understand that DC++ is free and you can set up such settings as you wish, but setting 999 slots?
Well actually no, it's not a problem, I got max slots 15 in hub settings so that's alright. I just wonder is it very good idea to put 999 slots..

I vote 2^12 max, it's a nice round number.

Users with that many get kicked by those enforcing hub rules, correct? Why worry about it?

Yes he does, yes he does, but still there is not even single situation where this maybe a good idea. If so, then why there's even a chance to do that stupid desicion and set 999 slots?

If you really wanna keep freedom etc. within DC++, maybe the 99 slots max even? Its still damn much but it sounds even a bit more wise than 999.

You want to keep freedom, by limiting freedom? You must be a politican.

We all want to make DC a better place - this is a good effort to help eliminate 'Leeches' and the setting of max slots is a good idea too - Thanks for adding that.

Whilst I'm unsure of the morality or ethicality of said effort, arguably allowing or encouraging hubs to rely more on clients subverting users' intentions in an untrusted environment renders such clients themselves more effectively subvertible, eroding system robustness.

There are situations where keeping 999 slots makes sence. Maybe it doesn't for you but i can think of several. ;))
Everyone is supposed to download from the hubs, - I don´t know why, but I never do anymore.
