Doesn't fully support TTH - Old Version

Post by Pothead » 2006-09-27 19:15

Since DC++ can no longer download from old versions, due to them not fully supporting TTH, isn't it time VeryOldVersion (which exists in old clients) was used in the Version.xml ?

I know the feeling
But I find this something of a administrative problem. As long as users don't see/understand/accept the benefits of TTH they won't upgrade. And I must admit (I'll probably be flamed/banned/kicked/andAnyOtherThingThatFeelsRough, for saying this) that old versions aren't necessarily bad versions (Yes, I know, I know, but hear me out).

1. Before TTH it was easier to find a bit more obscure material (No, not that donkey porn stuff)

2. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I find later clients ( > 0.674 ) a bit heavier on the GUI thread. With newer clients there is a saturation resulting in unusable GUI that I haven't seen before when, for example, autoconnecting to heavy used hubs.

But, and a big butt..., I know about the benefits ( and the security issues ) so...

(I guess that wasn't the answer you expected but I felt for writing my opinion) :)

IIRC, using VeryOldVersion to flush out old clients could be legally not advised, since then "we would have control over which clients are supposed to be used". Or something like that.

The feature already exists. It's been used before. How could using it again make anything any worse legally?

Yes, I must ask the same question. Has something revealed itself that made it obsolete?

It was removed since it was planned to not be used.

To now use it would be against the very idea why it was removed.
Everyone is supposed to download from the hubs, - I don´t know why, but I never do anymore.

Okay, was just an idea.
Guitarm, kind of . . . 0.674 security fix.
(Whereas for the actual TTHL and TTHF support, it could be set to 0.402)
