I also had the shock :) The main advantages of the mailing list is:
1) it provides an history
2) it can be used anywhere (I cannot use DC from work for example).

Also, I got an idea from this about a protocol draft:
No DC protocol! We all could use a huge mailing list to share files, we
can include them in the mails and send them. To search for a file you
simply write (in subject) "SEARCH <pattern>" and then the others on the
maillist checks his/hers HDD if he has that file. Pattern parsing should
be human doable, if he does have the file he sends a mail to the person
who sent the request/query with the file attatched to the mail...

Too late, it already exists, it is called "news" (NNTP) :)
